The Ipcress File: Trailer
How to Jailbreak your iPad Using the Sprint Jailbreaker Application
Last month we talked about how Geohot and the gang managed to jailbreak the iPad.
Well, if you’re wanting to get a slice of the action and try it out for yourself then all you need to do is sync your iPad to make sure everything on your computer is up to date. Then download the Sprint Jailbreaker Application for Mac or Window and follow the simple instructions. Now a word of cautionary advice is that don’t tamper with your iPad or iTunes whilst the application is doing its job and don’t unplug the device.
If you do want to jailbreak your phone then this will mean that your jailbroken iPad will allow for multitasking as well as allowing you to install apps. It is advised that you have a look at the MacStories for continual updates on which popular jailbreak apps work on the iPad and which you should avoid.
So if you decide to move onto the dark side of the iPad jailbreaking evolution then remember your iPad warranty will be void so this exercise is not for the fainthearted!

Billion Dollar Brain: Trailer
Play Cloths Summer 2010 Accessories
If somebody told us two years ago that Pusha and Malice, the rapping duo also known as The Clipse, would have built a baby empire in Play Cloths, their street apparel line, we probably wouldn’t have believed you. Well, the brothers Thornton have survived the test of time in the clothing industry and made their mark among other streetwear brands. Very impressive, especially taking into consideration the following: 1. They’re rappers by trade, not designers; 2. Most rappers that venture into fashion fall by the wayside (OutKast, Snoop Dogg, Ruff Ryderz…we can keep on going, but you’d probably blush in embarrassment remembering what you used to rock back in the day.)
We’ve done our fair share of Play Cloths coverage here on DrJays.com Live, most recently their Spring 2010 line, but the accessories the Play Cloths team has assembled for summer 2010 are something special. The gold and red color scheme on the two wallets (one is a coin purse), the belt, and the dog tag screams luxurious. The meticulous detail on the ostrich-esque leather material demonstrates how serious these guys are about portraying the high life via fashion. Make sure you head to your local Play Cloths retailer to scoop this stuff before it’s no longer around.
It’s only right to send you off with a song from their Road To The Casket mixtape, debuted in December of ‘08 to help promote their clothing line premiere, as well as their 2009 album Til The Casket Drops. Don’t sleep on these guys! Some of the best rhymes in hip-hop today, without a doubt. If you like it, grab the download below.

Mocca Pearl concept: espresso in the wilderness
Okay, it’s an egg-shaped version of the Moka Express stovetop espresso thing. So far so good. But how do you pick it up?
There’s actually a sketch at the bottom of the concept’s page that shows some sort of handle — but it looks a little bit wishful, you know what I’m saying? And to be fair, picking it up is also the hard part if you take your Moka Express camping.
It is a promising idea, though, and if they manage to get the logistics straight (another problem: it would make a tiny amount of coffee) I might even buy one. The tripod thing just does it for me, couldn’t say why.

Chris Brown: “It Hurts That My Charity Efforts Are Being Scrutinized”
In an interview with AOL’s PopEater.com on Tuesday, Beat Down Chris Brown talked about his May 15 benefit concert in Richmond and said it “hurts” that the motives behind the event are questioned. The singer, who is currently serving five years probation related to the February 8, 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, says all he wants to do is lend his support to his hometown and the earthquake-ravaged island of Haiti with the upcoming charity concert.
The controversial crooner , who turns 21 on tomorrow, told the site that his efforts to raise funds for the community of Richmond, Virginia, and those affected by the earthquake in Haiti is “not for PR or press.”
“When it’s a question of, ‘Oh, is he doing this to gain fans or get his image back?’ When you do something genuinely from your heart, it’s not for PR or press. If that was the case, I’d try to get Obama or somebody,” he laments.
“It hurts because it’s from my heart and I’m from Virginia and want to help my community out. I’m always here, and I always want to help out. Even with the Haiti stuff I’m doing… I wanted to do my own so that some of the proceeds would benefit them.”
Over the weekend, Chris performed a shaky rendition of The National Anthem before the Shane Mosley/Floyd Mayweather Jr. boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, causing some fans to question whether or not a boxing match was an appropriate venue for the singer to perform.

Gadgets of days gone by: HP DeskJet 500
This week at CrunchGear, we’re looking back at some of our favorite gadgets from the not-so-distant past — old phones, computers, media players, toys… those devices that still stand out in our memories despite their obsolescence. Feel free to contribute some of your own nostalgia.
The Hewlett Packard DeskJet 500 was the first printer I bought with my own money. I spent a lot on it, but it was an investment: it was a new era of inkjet printing, and my hand-me-down Okidata dot matrix printer just wasn’t going to cut it any more. I was a freshman in college, cranking out papers for class, and marveling at the quality of the letters on the page. I have absolutely no memory of how much replacement ink cartridges cost back then, but I do know that it was a fraction of the cost of the printer itself — unlike today, where a new printer can be had for only marginally more than buying replacement ink cartridges!
The HP DeskJet 500 was a workhorse. It never failed me in college, or beyond. I printed a lot, and never had a paper jam. Ink cartridges seemed to last forever, as I printed off revision after revision of essays about the Hobbesian State of Nature. I dabbled at “desktop publishing” with fliers and brochures for family events. Everything I threw at the DeskJet 500 printed. Everything.
I never had trouble installing printer drivers. It worked with DOS, Windows 3.1, and I think I even used it during that summer when I was tinkering with OS/2 Warp. I recommended the DeskJet 500 to everyone I met.
I have never owned a more reliable printer.

Who’s Making Moves: Vincent Nesi, CEO Of Luxirie
Vincent Nesi went from a career in finance to designing clothes, and now he’s CEO of Luxirie by LRG, heading up one of the most lively and diverse women’s street brands out there. I recently sat down with Vincent to preview Luxirie’s fall 2010 collection, chat about his idol, how he made the come-up and more:
Kiki: If you were forced to choose another career, what would it be?
Vinnie: “I have never really thought about another career, but I think I would have been a Nascar driver.”
Tell us a random fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
“I’m a closet prep.”
Who is your idol, living or dead?
“I like Ralph Lauren. He is an example of classic style, and he held a consistent point of view in the market over the years.”
How many hours of sleep do you get on average?
“Four to six—except during the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas.”
What’s your favorite drink?
“Coffee.”
What do you love most about NYC?
“To me, NYC has always held the pulse of the world and there’s no better place to come home to.”
On making moves in the fashion business: “When it comes to merchandising, you have buyers coming in every 15 minutes, so you have to be super quick. When you meet somebody, you have to know within the first minute, how do I play today? Are they super straight-laced, and you’re not supposed to use the f-word in the appointment? You have about 15 seconds to read them, and then another 15 minutes to make an entire presentation to try and sell them as much as you can.”
First gig in the industry: “Head of design at The School of Hard Knocks. It seemed to me that the uglier I would make things, the better they would sell. After a while I realized that you sort of have to go through an out-of-body experience when it comes to design. Rarely do you completely relate to your brand, unless its someone like Ralph Lauren, who designs for himself. You need to know what your key consumer is looking for, what kind of brands they’re wearing, and which stores are packed. Like Aeropostale and American Eagle are always packed…we take influence from them, but since they’re not necessarily willing to go edgy, we add that street twist.”
Career history: “After The School of Hard Knocks, I was at Rocawear women’s for a while. I then co-founded Le Tigre, which was a good run. We were selling in stores from Fred Segal to DrJays.com. I saw that timing was everything when I launched Le Tigre. We saw Lacoste go from a tiny brand to a giant over night. We saw Andy Roddick wearing it on the U.S. Open tennis court, while Jay-Z was wearing it in the “Girls, Girls Girls” video. We thought, ‘Man, this could be for everybody. Even if we could have 10 percent of Lacoste’s business, we’re good.’ After selling Le Tigre there I started a private label company, which did well in department stores and big-box stores. Then I became president of COOGI women’s. Its been 15 years since I’ve been in this business; a year-and-a-half at Luxirie now.”
Luxirie’s relationship with LRG: “Luxirie and LRG are brother and sister brands. We’re not anatomically the same, but we certainly come from the same DNA. You can see influence and relativity between the two but they’re not supposed to look identical. We’re the hot sister.”
