McAfee Security Update Crashes Windows XP Devices

Thousands of computers running Windows XP have been reportedly crashing or constantly rebooting after a McAfee security update was downloaded and installed.

The security update from the anti-virus software vendor had wrongly labeled part of the Windows OS as a virus, which resulted in Windows XP device chaos.

The McAfee 5958 update mistakenly identified the Windows svchost.exe file as a worm that sought to replace an existing svchost file with its own version in order to take over a machine.

McAfee’s update wrongly labeled svchost as the virus and then actioned a quarantine on it.

This caused machines to automatically shut down and upon restarting, the machines were not able to reload Windows, causing their repeated rebooting.

Windows relies on multiple copies of the svchost file to drive the operating system.

McAfee has since removed the offending update and replaced it with a file without the error. It has also apologised in a statement.

“McAfee teams are working with the highest priority to support impacted customers and plan to provide an update virus definition file shortly. McAfee apologises for any inconvenience to our customers.”

The company said that the incident affected, “less than one half of one percent of our enterprise accounts globally.”

Windows XP machines operating service pack 3 were the hardest hit by the malfunction.

Toshiba To Launch Android And Windows Tablets

With tablet-fever hitting the market, Toshiba is looking to cover all as much area as possible releasing a budget 10 inch tablet computer running Android, as well as a premium Windows tablet.

The two tablets running two distinctly different operating systems will also markedly differ on their exterior, with the Windows version touted as a dual-screen model.

However Toshiba has fallen short of dubbing its slate a “Windows 7” device, which has raised speculation that the manufacturer is working behind the scenes on Microsoft’s Courier platform, which will run Windows CE, and features two screens in a “booklet” form.

Microsoft’s mock-up of the Courier is pictured here.

The Android-based device will feature a 10 inch display, though no other specs have been revealed.

Toshiba is looking to run the Android platform to provide yet another device that can tap into Android’s expanding app market.

Speaking to Reuters, Toshiba general manager of digital products Jeff Barnes said that the company was already speaking with partners to provide user content.

“Media consumption on these slates will be the main user activity,” he said.

“We definitely see a place for the slate, we see there’s a market there. It’ll be expansive like netbooks, it won’t be cannibalistic.”

While there is currently no release date, Toshiba and other tablet contenders will have to be quick, with Apple already selling over half a million iPads in just two weeks.

HTC Touch Diamond Hacked to Include Windows Phone 7 Series

Yesterday we showed you a video of the popular HTC HD2 hacked to include the Window Phone 2 Series update.  Well it would seem that another video has been uploaded on YouTube, however this time it is the HTC Diamond being hacked.

The hack is known as a RDP hack, in which the person is running a Windows Phone 7 emulator on a PC and using a remote client (RDP) to access the PC.

Although, we know that HTC are going to give the Diamond a Window Phone 7 Series update, it certainly shows that people are becoming increasingly interested in the platform and would like a lot of the popular smartphones to be ported over to the Windows platform.

Whereas Sharp decided to cautiously embrace Android, Toshiba still seems to be firmly in the Windows camp. After releasing the "iPhone killer TG01" on WinMo 6.5 last year, the company announced another Windows Mobile-based cell phone in Japan today (Toshiba is one of Microsoft's official "Mobile Partners", after all).
