With tablet-fever hitting the market, Toshiba is looking to cover all as much area as possible releasing a budget 10 inch tablet computer running Android, as well as a premium Windows tablet.
The two tablets running two distinctly different operating systems will also markedly differ on their exterior, with the Windows version touted as a dual-screen model.
However Toshiba has fallen short of dubbing its slate a “Windows 7” device, which has raised speculation that the manufacturer is working behind the scenes on Microsoft’s Courier platform, which will run Windows CE, and features two screens in a “booklet” form.
Microsoft’s mock-up of the Courier is pictured here.
The Android-based device will feature a 10 inch display, though no other specs have been revealed.
Toshiba is looking to run the Android platform to provide yet another device that can tap into Android’s expanding app market.
Speaking to Reuters, Toshiba general manager of digital products Jeff Barnes said that the company was already speaking with partners to provide user content.
“Media consumption on these slates will be the main user activity,” he said.
“We definitely see a place for the slate, we see there’s a market there. It’ll be expansive like netbooks, it won’t be cannibalistic.”
While there is currently no release date, Toshiba and other tablet contenders will have to be quick, with Apple already selling over half a million iPads in just two weeks.
