Top 3 Camera Phones: The Best All-Rounders

Mobile phones are fast becoming everyone’s main digital camera as well, thanks to an increase in camera performance and quality of snaps taken.

We’re going to take a look at the top 3 mobile cameras, but that doesn’t just mean more megapixels, its important that the camera phone provides quality all-round performance as well.

So let’s compare mobile phones and see what you should take to your next family gathering.

Samsung T929 Memoir

At 8 megapixels you may be wondering why we’ve started with the Samsung T929 Memoir instead of its big brother the Pixon 12 with its whopping 12 megapixel camera. Well when you look at the overall performance of the two, the T929 Memoir is just… better.

What the T929 Memoir has over the Pixon 12 is a xenon flash, which makes it a better all-round camera. Why Samsung boosted the camera quality on the Pixon 12 but failed to think that people might take pictures at night as well as at the strike of noon is not quite understood.

The T929 Memoir’s camera comes with autofocus, face and smile detection, geo-tagging and WVGA resolution to capture video at 30 fps.

Additional camera functions include shutter bag controls such as timer, brightness and 16x digital zoom, but unfortunately it doesn’t use optical zoom.

Pictures taken by the T929 Memoir are sharp with true colours, and its Xenon flash keeps the quality snaps happening throughout any light.

For such a good result to your pictures, you do have to wait around a bit, as the T929 Memoir is slow to focus, and there is a noticeable lag time from when you press the capture button to when you image is taken.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz

Similarly to our Samsung argument, we’ve included the Sony Ericsson Vivaz with an 8 megapixel camera  in our list over the 12 megapixel Satio. Yes, the Satio may pack a better camera, but for an overall camera phone package, the Vivaz wins out.

The first problem with the Satio is that it’s really quite slow overall. It may have an amazing camera, but the lag means you can end up missing out on the exact moment you want to capture.

Sony Ericsson’s Vivaz on the other hand is a smaller phone- both inside and out, and we found it more responsive in all respects, including using its camera.

The Vivaz’s other claim to fame is that it shoots in 720p HD video, as well as a range of still camera options that puts it in the same league as a mid-range point-and-shoot digital camera.

The camera reproduces colours well in a range of different lighting, and actually using the camera is a piece of cake, with icons on the screen letting you keep tabs of exactly what options you have activated.

You can switch between full autofocus or use specalist shot options such as infinite mode for landscapes, portrait and macro mode.

There are also soalrise and sepia effects on board to throw in a bit of creativity to your pics.

Overall though, the Vivaz isn’t just about packing in the largest amount of megapixels, but is more about how it uses them, and we think it does a great all-round job, as do others in their Sony Ericsson Vivaz reviews.

LG Viewty Smart

The Viewty Smart surprised us with its camera, which is again 8 megapixels, and makes the most of Schneider-Kreuznach optics.

LG has equipped the Viewty Smart with auto-focus, a range of settings and LED flash.

The Viewty Smart also boasts LG’s Intelligent Shot technology, which analyses your picture subject and the lighting conditions, then automatically selects the best camera settings. It does this by comparing screen capture to seven pre-programmed image scenarios.

Again, there’s no optical zoom on this camera, but the 4x zoom you do get still holds the focus well.

Other camera features include face-tracking, smile detection, image stabilization and continuous shooting.

This means that in panorama mode, you can take three photos in succession and stitch them together to create a panoramic shot.

If you’re somewhat into your photography, there is even the option to change the ISO settings up to 1600, as well as tampering with the white balance.

LG’s Viewty Smart features an easy-to-use camera that lets you whip it out, point-and-shoot and still produce top quality pictures.
