DJ Premier Remembers Guru; Remains Mum On MC’s Scathing Final Remarks

Rapper Guru’s former Gang Starr partner DJ Premier has paid tribute to the late lyricist, describing him as “a brother” – despite his former friend’s alleged biting remarks about him in a farewell letter.

The “Ex-Girl To The Next Girl” MC died on Monday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 43.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Premier writes: “It was a sad day for me to get confirmation on the death of a man who I will continue to call my brother, Keith Elam, better known as Guru of the legendary Gang Starr… I’ve been asked to comment on a letter speaking ill of me which was supposedly written by Guru in his dying days. All I will say about it is that our time together was beautiful, we built a hip-hop legacy together, and no one can re-write history or take away my love for him… I love you Goo… DJ Premier.”

Premier and Guru famously fell out nearly a decade ago — the beef is rumored to have left the Boston-born Guru, whose real name was Keith Elam, so bitter that he held a grudge against his former collaborator until his dying day.

Following his death, Guru’s reportedly shady business partner Solar released a letter allegedly written by the hip-hop legend, in which he wrote that his final wish was that Premier, who he reportedly hadn’t spoken to in seven years, must not be attached to anything using his “likeness, events, tributes etc.” or “connected in any way to my situation.”

The request raised speculation the letter was actually written by Solar — a man accused of barring even Elam’s own family access to him in his final months. Solar denies penning Guru’s final remarks.
