Does the World Really Need Another iPhone?

About six months ago, I was finally contemplating making the big leap. For nearly five years, I was a card-carrying member of the T-Mobile Sidekick club. I had every Sidekick from the original B&W joint to the LX. But after being poked incessantly by co-workers, friends, publicists and even a couple of rappers, I decided that I was going nowhere fast with my beloved SK. So, after receiving a Apple iPhone 3Gs to test out when it first dropped last year, I thought long and hard about making the leap to the iPhone.

I’m sure glad I didn’t. It’s not that I didn’t love the iPhone. If you’re obsessed with your cell phone now, try playing with the iPhone for a couple days and then giving it back—it’s damn near impossible. The thing literally does everything. Need to find a restaurant? There’s an app for that. Need to find what time a movie starts? There’s an app for that. Bored out of your mind at the airport? There’s an app for that. It was incredible. A little too incredible, actually. I was hooked immediately.

And Apple knows that. It’s one of the main reasons they keep updating the thing so frequently. Though the 3Gs has been out for just a little over a year, they announced earlier today that a new iPhone equipped with iPhone OS 4.0 will be shipping this summer. It sounds great, too. There’s gonna be multitasking, a better camera, iBooks (just like on the iPad) and a Game Center. Basically, it’ll be a better version of the 3Gs, which is still just as dope as it was a year ago. But you’ll need to have the new one in order to keep up, won’t you?

That’s why I’m glad I didn’t go with the iPhone six months ago. While I love the iPhone and all that it does, you’re basically signing over your life (and at least one paycheck a year) to get the latest model. And, for what? A few extra features that, while cool, aren’t exactly essential to your life? Thanks, but no thanks. I’m not ready to make the leap.

Does the world really need another iPhone—or is Apple just milking it for all its worth?
