Jay-Z David Ortiz Lawsuit Over 40/40 Club Name

Yankees fan Jay-Z has filed a lawsuit against his team’s arch rival, Boston Red Sox first baseman David Ortiz, who named his new club in the Dominican Republic Forty-Forty — which kinda sounds exactly like Jay’s 40/40 chain here in the States.

Hov ain’t havin’ it!

The hip-hop mogul and his business partner Juan Perez sued Ortiz on Thursday for naming his Caribbean nightclub after their chain of sports bar lounges.

Jay-Z and Perez own 40/40 Clubs in New York City, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas, with plans to open further venues in Tokyo and Macau. They claim Ortiz is trying to capitalize on the success of their chain by swiping their name.

“David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions long before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty Club,” said the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Federal Court.

Jay-Z and his partners are seeking $5 million in damages as part of the suit, which also names Ortiz’s sister as a plaintiff.
