Review: HTC Legend. Android 2.1 Gets Legendary

Overview:
It’s a good-looking Android phone packed with features all in an aluminium body. But does the HTC Legend actually live up to the hype under the bonnet, or did the Taiwanese manufacturer get a bit lazy and just create a metal version HTC Hero? Let’s take a look in our HTC Legend review.

Review:
At first glance, you really can’t go past the look of the HTC Legend- it’s as stylish as a Lady Gaga hairdo.

In your hand, the phone boasts a fantastic symmetry with the centred optical trackball and camera lens on the back.

Its aluminium unibody design gives the phone a solid, well-built feel, with the only discernible plastic to be spotted on the discreet buttons under the screen, the speaker grill holes, around the camera lens and on the battery cover.

All of this aluminium makes the Legend look, well legendary, however the down side is that all of this smooth-looking metal can get easily scratched when shoved in your pocket with your car keys or loose change.

“But I’ll just put it in my protective leather case,” you may think. Well, that may not be possible either, with the jutting out jaw of the handset making it a bit tough to squeeze into a standard phone pouch.

The Legend’s 3.2-inch plastic screen is the same size as what you would get on the HTC Hero, but a reduced border around its edges gives the Legend a slightly roomier look.

The Legend has further broken the ranks of LCD screens to give you an AMOLED display, which produces blacker blacks and brighter colours thanks to its independence of a backlight.

The screen further keeps a strong picture when viewed from an angle, and will extend the phone’s battery life, as it needs less power to show darker colours. Its with a 320 X 480 resolution display may not be the highest spec on the market, but certainly makes for clear viewing.

Touch responsiveness is good with no lag time as you navigate through the phone, and you even get pinch to zoom, which is really rather necessary for web browsing.

HTC has further differentiated the Legend from the Hero with an optical joystick instead of a trackball, prolonging the life of the handset but doing away with a moving part.

On the inside, the Hero’s 528MHz chipset, has been upgraded to a Qualcomm 600MHz MSM7227 for the Legend, providing for a faster, more powerful phone.

Both Hero and Legend have 5 megapixel cameras as well, but the Legend has lived up to its name again by including an LED flash.

Masking a stellar Android 2.1 operating system is HTC’s Sense UI, which provides seven homescreens to make the most of HTC’s widgets., accessible through an online widget library.

HTC Sense also comes with Friend Stream, which consolidates your various social networking personas into the one place for you to easily keep track of who updated their wall and what was last tweeted. Friend Stream also lets you be a bit lazy by updating both your Facebook and Twitter statuses in the one go.

Other legendary features includes a ringer that knows when it has been heard. When you pick up the phone, the ringer lowers in volume, and silences completely if you turn the handset upside-down.

Overall, we love how the HTC Legend has taken Android and given it a classy home full of features that just keeps you coming back for more.

The Gaj-It Verdict:
Design: 8/10
Usability: 9/10
Features: 8/10
Value: 8/10

We Say:
The HTC Legend lives up to its name, with increased specs both inside and outside the phone. There is still room for design improvement, but overall we can’t fault the stylishness of the handset, and you get a cracker phone under the bonnet as well. Keep an eye out for the Legend amongst other mobile phone deals.
