Overview:
If there was one thing the LG Cookie proved, it was that people like affordable touchscreen phones. A lot. The Korean manufacturer has decided to cash in even more on this trend with its GD510 Pop, but will this phone end up hiding in the Cookie’s shadow? Let’s find out.
Review:
LG has gone for the less-is-more approach, with the Pop hailed as the smallest 3-inch touchscreen handset on the high street, sporting a WQVGA resolution of 240 x 400 pixels.
Measuring up at 97 x 50 x 11mm and weighing a feather light 87g, you can see that LG has stripped out all of the bits and pieces that people don’t really use in their smartphone, to offer a light, budget touchscreen phone.
Looking at the exterior, the minimalist effect is enhanced by the sole button on the front of the silver phone, that changes colour to tell you what mode you’re in. The button will light up green when you’re on the homescreen, allowing you to take an incoming call or select an application.
If you’re in the midst of talking to your mum, the button will turn red, ready for you to hang up, or end an application. The simplicity of the button system keeps this touchscreen phone highly accessible to even the newest novice on the mobile front.
The Pop has a brushed metal effect on the back. Real metal would have weighed the phone down both weight-wise and price-wise you see.
While LG has stripped back the non-essential features on this phone, you still get a surprising amount for your pound.
The phone comes with video and music players, as well as an FM radio which is really a nice touch.
If you have more CDs than Universal Music, there is a MicroSD card slot available, with the Pop supporting cards up to 8GB.
There is a camera as well, though at 3 megapixels it’s not the highest spec on the market. It’s what you get on an iPhone though, and judging from the amount of mobile uploads to Facebook every day, it does the job well enough.
The Pop is lacking in Wi-Fi or GPS connectivity, but there is Bluetooth, and really this is a phone after all rather than a laptop.
What is quite cool is that you can add a solar-cell powered back panel to provide an alternate power source, which reduces the running price of this handset even further.
When playing around with the phone, you are treated to three desktops on your homescreen.
One desktop is dedicated to widgets, including the usual suspects of a picture gallery, calendar, music player and clock.
The next screen has been dubbed Livesquare, which allows you to set custom animated images to your contacts and then keep tabs on all of your message notifications from each one.
Finally you get a screen dedicated to dragging links to your favourite phone contacts.
Available on plans starting at £30.00 per month the LG Pop is a good handset to get someone started on touchscreen technology, or for anyone who wears clothes with particularly small pockets.
The Gaj-It Verdict:
Design: 8/10
Usability: 8/10
Features: 7/10
Value: 8/10
We Say:
We like the optional solar panel on the back of this handset to help users tap into free energy, and we also like the phone’s compact body and streamlined design. If you’re looking to get someone off buttons and onto a touchscreen, this may just be the handset you need to Pop into their hands.
