Review: Samsung Galaxy Portal, the Budget Android

Overview:
The Galaxy Portal may initially appear as a smaller version of the original Samsung Galaxy, but that means a cheaper handset and you even get Samsung’s second attempt at an Android phone. Does the Galaxy Portal still deliver enough features to keep you interested? Let’s take a look.

Review:
The original Samsung Galaxy was the Korean manufacturer’s first attempt at an Android phone, and while it packed some solid features, it still trailed behind its Android competitors.

As did the Galaxy, the Galaxy Portal comes with Android 1.5, but already the newer version phone seems a touch more responsive which is perhaps down to what’s been stripped out on the inside.

The internal memory on the Galaxy Portal has been massively reduced from 8GB to 180MB. Instead, Samsung has furnished you with a MicroSD card slot, so you can take control over how much memory you need from your phone.

The screen may look the same as its predecessor, but uses TFT technology instead of OLED, which just reduces the colour brightness, as well as the cost of the handset.

You can still view your messages on a 3.2 inch, 320×480 pixel screen, which serves its purpose just fine.

It is a capacitive touchscreen, which makes for great accuracy, though capacitive-enabled features like multi-touch are sadly nowhere to be seen.

What you do get with this phone is a great range of connectivity options with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSDPA and quad-band GSM on board.

On the creative side, there is a 3.2 megapixel camera, which will do the job to capture your moments out with mates for a Facebook upload.

Actually capturing a pic and saving it onto your memory card is a touch slow, but this is really the only part of the phone you can attribute that adjective to.

The processor on the Galaxy Portal has been powered up to 800MHz as opposed to the original Galaxy’s 528MHz.

This makes web browsing and downloading super fast, which is perfect as you’re going to end up spending quite a bit of time on the Android Market for new apps.

What’s great about Android is that its homescreen in particular is more customisable than most other operating systems, with widgets able to be customized and take a life of their own, instead of appearing as a standard box in a grid.

The music player is easy to use while on-the-go, popping up on your homescreen with a basic play/pause button, and a skip button. Minimalism indeed.

Tapping onto the music widget provides more options, including creating playlists on the fly.

Battery life can be summed up in one word: long. The Galaxy Portal may have the same 1500mAh battery as its predecessor, but Samsung has managed to squeezed more juice out of it.

Overall Samsung’s Galaxy Portal is a great handset for anyone looking to enter the wonderful world of Android. It’s an affordable phone that you find from the guys at MobileShop.com.

The Gaj-It Verdict:
Design: 7/10
Usability: 8/10
Features: 8/10
Value: 9/10

We Say:
What Samsung has done with the Galaxy Portal, is create an Android handset that won’t break the bank. You still end up with a well-equipped phone that gets you onto the Google Android Market, which is not to be sneezed at.
