Tokyo’s Manhattan Records has been working to bring hip hop, R&B and House music to Japan for three decades, and are credited with promoting the growth of rap in Japan.
To celebrate their 30 years in business, Manhattan Records have combined with famous cartoonist and Santastic clothing designer Santa Inoue on a t-shirt line. I got put up on Santa Inoue via his manga, Tokyo Tribe, which had black folks in it dressed how dudes from around the way dress. For this collaboration, illustrations of characters Kai, Hashim and Mera are prominent. The largely printed blue-tonal image on the front of the t-shirts is inspired by the Manhattan Records’ logo.
