Gilbert Arenas Avoids Jail Time In Felony Gun Case

Suspended Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas will not face jail time for his felony gun conviction from a locker room confrontation with a teammate. A judge sentenced the NBA star to two years probation, 30 days in a halfway house, and 400 hours of community service.

The sentence came as a tough blow for prosecutors, who wanted Arenas to serve at least three months behind bars for threatening a teammate over an ill-fated card game.

“I am very sorry that all this happened. Every day I wake up wishing it didn’t,” the NBA star said after the hearing.

Arenas pleaded guilty to violating the city’s gun laws in a Dec. 21 incident at Verizon Center. Following an argument over an unpaid gambling debt, Arenas brought several guns to the Wizards’ locker room and set them in front of teammate Javaris Crittenton’s locker with a sign telling him to “PICK 1.”

Both players have been suspended without pay for the remainder of the season and the Wizards have said Crittenton, 22, will be let go.

Arenas has also been ordered to donate $5,000 to a fund for victims of violent crime.
